Diva Cup Review and Giveaway

As I started going Eco-Friendly the one thing I said I would probably never do is switch the a menstral cup.  I started buying EF tampons instead, but still had that feeling like there was more I could do.  My hesitation with menstral cups comes from high school when I used a different brand of cups and found it to be "pokey".  Even after trimming the stem it was still hard and not sharp on the end and really irritated me, especially when having to sit in a hard school chair for 6 hours a day.  So I stopped and swore I'd never go back.

Then everyone around me started praising the Diva Cup.  Seriously, not a single person I know who started using one dislikes it.  I decided then to try it out again and just see.  I will admit, I was hesitant and I didn't have very high hopes for my Diva Cup.

I got it just at my last period was ending last cycle so I didn't get a chance to use it, but upon inspection I noticed one very important difference between Diva Cup and the cup I used in high school- the stem seemed flexible!  Instead of being a solid stem it sort of has a ridge with a hallow inside at the tip of the stem, which makes it appear a lot more comfortable.  But I still worried.

Then my cycle started and I excitedly tried my Diva Cup for the first time!  The first time- I screwed it up.  As a tampon wearer I didn't realize you don't need put the Diva Cup in as far as you do tampons and it gave me horrible cramps.  After speaking with some other Diva Cup users I pulled it out to where it's supposed to sit- and the cramps went away!  The stem was flexible like I thought it would be- to the point where I didn't feel like I needed to trim it!  The cup itself is extremely comfortable and even on my heaviest day it did not leak!

So I admit it- Diva Cup is AMAZING!  I am so happy I got the opportunity to try it and change my views of Menstral cups forever!  Now I am saving money every month by not having to buy tampons, and I'm able to replace them with a renewable item that I can use for a long time before it needs to be replaced!

What I Love: It's comfortable and the most eco-friendly option I could find when it comes to your menstral cycle.  The stem is flexible and is very comfortable for me- once I insert the Diva Cup, I forget it's there!  For me it holds a lot and doesn't need to be changed often, even during my heaviest days.   Also, from my experience, Diva Cup is the BEST menstral cup!  Don't pay less for an off-brand cup, these are well worth the price for the comfort they offer!   On top of all of that it is Latex, Plastic, and BPA free!  Awesome!!

What I Don't Love: If you insert it too far in it caused bad cramps for me, which was uncomfortable until I figured out what I'd done wrong.  Also taking it out and emptying the cup could be interesting if you work 8 hours a day and need to empty it in your semi-public work restroom!  I don't have this problem since I work from home now, but someday when I go back to work I imagine this will be interesting!

I learned from their website that there is a sanitary wash solution to use to cleanse the product. This is nice because you know it won't contain products that will irritate you when you use it again.

I learned that most women spend $150-200 U.S. a year on disposable tampons and pads. That's a lot of money.

Brace yourself. I have had my Diva Cup for - no joke - almost EIGHT YEARS.

It still functions, but after having a kid I feel like I need to move to the next size (a bit leaky), plus it has yellowed over time. A new one would actually be awesome!

I know most everything about it, but I did learn that it shouldn't be store in a plastic bag since the moisture can't properly evaporate.

The DivaCup holds one ounce (30 ml). The entire average monthly flow is around 30 to 40 ml according to the Mayo Clinic.

Theoretically, the flow could slosh around inside the cup and reverse out of the cup slightly, but it cannot travel back through the small cervical opening from which the flow expels.

It's fantastic for swimming, outdoor enthusiasts, aerobics, cycling, traveling, camping, etc. It is perfect for extreme sports also. You will feel fresh, secure, and liberated. No feminine hygiene products to pack (or run out of). No worries about staying close to a bathroom. No restrictions on physical activity. Because you can wear The DivaCup longer than tampons or pads, you have the convenience of not having to think about your period all day long!

I found out that they recommend that a menstrual cup be replaced at least once a year.
