We choose to skip the traditional cake at our DIY wedding. Instead we had a cake buffet with 5 or 6 options. My sister made a torte cake from my grandmother's recipe, a friend brought a handmade lemon cake, my dad brought another cake (from his favorite bakery), and we supplemented with pumpkin creme cake (from our favorite bakery) and some apple pies (from the local grocery store). The guests definitely did not want for dessert and many commented on the fun buffet.

In the end we spent about $70 on our favorite bakery cake and pies -- not bad for an 80-person reception. I totally acknowledge that we had tons of help and couldn't have done it without them, but if you have family and/or friends inclined to baking, consider asking them to make a cake as their wedding gift to you.

Note: If you have specific ideas about what you want and there is a chance you'll be upset with a less than perfect outcome, then pay the money and consult a professional baker. No friend or family member wants to work hard just to find out they disappointed the bride and ruined her cake.

I love the cupcake idea. I think getting a decent cake need not be expensive. If couples won't mind the "brand" or the name of the bakeshop, I'm sure they can find some great pastry shops to make their cake.
